The SPUD display lets you fold your monitor up like an umbrella

Multiple monitor setups are great when working at home but it's not exactly easy to lug around an extra monitor while travelling. The Spud display aims to solve that problem by creating a 24-inch monitor that can fold up like an umbrella, making it easy to carry around when you need to do things away from your regular setup.

The 24-inch spontaneous pop-up display (SPUD) just hit Kickstarter this week and has already managed to generate over $200,000 in funding. The display folds into the size of a paperback book for carrying around and comes with an HDMI connection for your laptop, though a wireless adapter can also be used to connect anything from a tablet or smartphone to a regular PC.

There is, of course, a downside to this display- it runs at a 1280×720 resolution, rather than full HD, which most would probably prefer. This is addressed on the Kickstarter page, with the team explaining that “the price of Spud would have significantly increased and the Spud chassis would have to be 20 percent larger” to accommodate a higher resolution. This display also won't work great in direct sunlight, so it won't be all that usable outside in the middle of a sunny day.

The Spud is battery powered, though, meaning you won't always need to be near a power outlet to set it up. However, this all does come at a price as the expected retail price for one of these if around $499. Early backers will be able to nab one or two up at a lower rate for now though. Right now, the first units are expected to begin shipping in June 2017.

KitGuru Says: As much as I like the idea of an ultra portable display like this, I imagine the 720p resolution will be a bit of a deal breaker for some. That said, I can see this being a good idea for those who travel quite a bit for work.

  1. I always look at these Kickstarter’s and think that most of them are a nice idea, then they get to the price… and I wonder if people are just stuck in the mindset of Kickstarter being a great way to help startups and that it’s always cheaper on Kickstarter, because $499 for this is terrible. It’s a pocket projector and a screen. You can get a full HD 1080p projector that is smaller than a tablet for $100, why on earth pay $400 extra for less resolution and a screen?

  2. So this is basically just a screen with a Pico projector behind it that can run on a battery. I have done the small screen idea like this and a pico when going on camping trips. You set the screen and pico on the picnic table pico projector behind the screen and in seconds you got a 32-36 inch TV to watch a movie on once the sun goes down. With this you are pretty much paying for the projector mostly that being to most costly part of the kit. I do like this idea it is so compact and folds out of the way almost completely.

  3. You can wait until Samsung does it for cheap, or you can pay the little guy $$$ so the people actually innovating can have a chance to compete.

FYI, a small company will never be able to offer big company commodity prices. Razor thin margins kill everyone worth less than a billion.
