Bethesda no longer bringing mods to Fallout 4 or Skyrim on PS4

Back when Bethesda announced Fallout 4 at E3 2015, the studio promised to bring mod support not just to PC, but to consoles as well. While Fallout 4 modding has been working well on Xbox One for months, Bethesda has apparently been butting heads with Sony on the subject for a while and now, mod support for PS4 has been canceled.

Mod support is also set to arrive with Skyrim: Special Edition in October. This will still happen for Xbox One but PS4 users will be left out, as Sony is apparently refusing to “approve user mods the way they should work”.

In an update on Bethesda's site, the company said: “After months of discussion with Sony, we regret to say that while we have long been ready to offer mod support on PlayStation 4, Sony has informed us they will not approve user mods the way they should work: where users can do anything they want for either Fallout 4 or Skyrim Special Edition. We are disappointed by Sony’s decision given the considerable time and effort we have put into this project, and the amount of time our fans have waited for mod support to arrive.”

Bethesda ended its update by saying that the studio still beleives in bringing mods to consoles and it hopes to find a way to eventually bring support to PS4 users. However, that can't happen until Sony allows for proper mod support.

KitGuru Says: PS4 owners have been waiting a long time to finally get mod support in Fallout 4. Unfortunately, it looks like Sony isn't willing to open up its platform enough to let Bethesda intergrate it properly. Things could change in the future but for now, it looks like mods are going to be limited to PC and Xbox One.

  1. Sadly that’s Sony. Microsoft can be really controlling but has “opened” over the last couple of years. But Sony is freakish. an average of 2500 DMCAs per-day, BluRay’s DRM, their old CD drive DRM, and campaigning for torrent users, not the pirates, to get 15 years minimum, with 20 desired. Completely mad.

  2. They have try and make there billions of $ losses back somehow

  3. Well, I hope the PS4 players learn their lesson – When you use a platform owned by somebody, that limits you, because the owner of the platform may not allow certain features for their platform (ex. Sony). So if you want to actually have more features, you gonna have to move to a platform that isn’t owned, that is universal, i.e. PC.

  4. And this is why you go PC if you want 1080p, 60 fps and MODS.

  5. As much as I always love Sony’s consoles – and more importantly the games on them – I am glad I decided to stick with PC for moddable games. I choose for another reason – PC modding can always do more due to the likes of SKSE – but this enforces my decision. I will still get a PS4 Pro for non-moddable games, but PC will always be my platform on choice for moddable games.

  6. microsoft used to be the closed platform, screwing over indie devs and what not; now it sounds like ps4 is moving in that direction while microsoft improves itself.

  9. As a longtime member of the PC MASTER RACE-

It pisses me off that people must put on their own shackles to be slaves to the corporate masters of consoles.
Why would you pay lots of money to get an inferior experience while being controlled at the same time?

PC, it is freedom. Do the right thing, and join your fellow comrades of the glorious master race. You will miss all 10 decent games that might actually be exclusive to console, while if you don’t buy a PC you will miss far more… in the thousands actually!

  11. Consoles have always been a closed platform, and I would have been really surprised if mods would have be accepted without any kind of control over them.
For example, on PC, lots of mods are breaking intellectual property (like adding an real car to a race game without having a license for it) and I really doubt Sony would like to be held responsible for distributing illegal content.

Before throwing rocks at Sony, I would like to know what was their view about that, and what Bethesda were ready to do to prevent illegal content distribution.

  12. By lying to the general public, attacking pirates and making a net loss as such, and refusing mods.

    They’re pissing money away.
