It looks like we may already have an idea of what to expect from Microsoft's upcoming Surface Pro 5 tablet as new information came to light this week, pointing out some specifications for the upcoming Windows tablet. Upgrades coming include an Ultra HD display, a new Intel Kaby Lake CPU and 16GB of RAM.
The initial report comes from Mobipicker, citing manufacturing sources in China who have supposedly been accurate in the past. The report goes on to say that the Surface Pro 5 will offer a 4K display as an upgrade option for those with the cash, while most of them will probably ship with a standard 2K display.
On top of that, there is a nod to Microsoft using an Intel Kaby Lake processor in the Surface Pro 5, which will offer a bit of an improvement over Skylake while still being made on the 14nm process. There will also be a bigger battery for longer usage and 16GB of RAM.
The source also says that the Surface Pro 5 won't enter production until the end of the year, with availability expected in early 2017. This lines up with a rumour we heard just this week that suggested that Intel's new Kaby Lake CPUs might not arrive until early 2017.
KitGuru Says: As always with anonymous sources, take this information with a grain of salt as it may not end up being accurate. That said, if all of this ends up being true, then the Surface Pro 5 should be quite a compelling tablet for those that require that level of power in that form factor.
Why would you want 4k on a 10″ or 11″ tablet?
16GB Ram is already available. I hope they remove 128GB SSD option and make the minimum 256GB. They also need to increase battery life to last at least 8 hours for a workday, right now its a struggle to get 5 hours. It would also be nice if they lower the price and include the keyboard cover.
Those specs are nice, but don’t effect productivity for any of my team members. What we need are Cellular capabilities. If this is a PRO device, it should be what “professionals” need, not what “consumers” want. Have a Surface 5 for the normal consumers, but please, learn what it means to be a professional grade productivity device.
So all you want is better specs and additional accessories for less money. Somehow I think that wont happen 😛
If you think this is something consumers want you are dreaming. A few do, but not enough to justify selling it.
Surface Pro is about 12″, but I still think 4k is rather pointless for it.
You obviously didn’t read what I just wrote. I don’t give a darn about the consumers I’m all about business users. This is being sold as a professional device it needs to cater to professionals not consumers
4K seems to be more of a marketing related move than a value added benefit.
I am intrigued by the Surface Pro – 4 and 5. On one hand they are an interesting hybrid solution. I have several student in the graduate business classes I teach that use them. Typically one or two per 20 students. Other than the loud clicking of the older Surface 3 Pro keyboards, these seem like pretty good machines. I guess I would like to see Apple create a Surface PC like device a hybrid of a iPad Pro and a Mac – it would be iOS as a tablet and MacOS as a PC. I know they will not go this route, but it would be cool. Sorry to be off topic.
i just want tablets to have dedicated gpu.
Ask that to phone manufacturers cramming 1440p onto 5-6″ screens too…
I usually do. My phone has 1280×720; very happy with that.
Which would make them bulky, hot and reduce the battery life.
so do i.. and NO a dedicated GPU would not make this bulky, might make it run a bit hotter though but not really any more thicker…
1) user will not feel heat as he will be using keyboard and mouse for graphic intensive task.
2) Putting 1 or 2 fans will do the trick and decrease the thermal throttle of the tablet.
3) switchable graphics: when you plugin power the dedicate gpu will be use as it will not reduce the battery life.
4) a little increase in weight will not effect most of the users.
