AMD Radeon R9 490 and R9 490x may launch in June

The rumour mill has been spinning this week and today, it churned out some information on AMD's next series of graphics cards. Apparently, we may see AMD launch the Radeon R9 490 and R9 490x at the end of June this year, following on from a preview at Computex, which kicks off at the end of May.

According to a report from Hardware Battle, the Radeon R9 490x will be based on the Polaris 10 architecture, rather than Fiji. Right now, AMD's plans for Fiji are uncertain, while the Radeon Pro Duo dual-Fiji GPU is still set to launch soon, we don't know if the Fury X will continue to be sold on its own or tweaked and re-released as part of the new 400 series.

Right now, the R9 490x and R9 490 are set to compete directly with Nvidia's upcoming GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 graphics cards, which have also yet to be officially announced. The big take away here is the Polaris architecture, which AMD claims will deliver a “historic leap in performance per watt” for Radeon graphics cards.

None of this is confirmed yet but Computex isn't too far away so perhaps we will learn more closer to the time.

KitGuru Says: We will have quite a few exciting GPU launches this year with new architecture from both Nvidia and AMD. Are any of you waiting on new cards? Are you planning to upgrade this year?

  1. I need to upgrade in order to go VR. Looks to me that a R9 490X or 390X would be better suited for VR than a GTX 980. I am not sure if I am ready to switch yet though…

  2. We need something in the mid-range for $150-$199 that is faster than R9 380X and has TDP around 120W.

vega with HBM2 is going to be the successor to the fiji line, that’s been covered in several articles and interviews

  4. Not too far away? Over a month and a half is not far?

VR games feel like a Wii atm so not really interested until they unleash the potential.

  8. I know, I’m looking for the Nvidia Light field VR. Hope they up the frame rate. I need it all high res, high fps, no motion sickness, no high temps, no screen door effects and ultra graphics – I only need Star Citizen and nothing less for VR – or AR? – still good they both are.

  9. Hoping the 480X is in a mid range price , would love to upgrade my 270X 😀

  10. lets see price ranges, over the last few times anyone has come out with vid cards, seen price`s from low 150`s for the base line, to mid range prices of 250 and below, High grade has been from 300.00 and below, now with the R9 300 series price`s have spiked around 100.00 and i bet with these new 400 sries cards we will see another spike not 100.00 or 150.00 But i bet the claim as high as 250.00 for high range, mid range 165.00 and low 100.00. Would be nice to see a price down fall for these new cards, but with the My card is better then your card fighting thats been going on for years, not just with AIT/AMD side of things but Nvidia as well. the fan boys of Nvidia cry and throw fits when they get beat down by AMD fan boys. I my self lay with in the mid side of both cards. Would be nice for one of these makers to say Ok enuff is enuff lets make a card that is not high in price but high in Build and gives everyone the high side of the cards that we have . But lets face it, its all about money money money, and charging these high ass prices, and this card lacks when this card packs in the top. But i dont think we will ever see that happening. any time soon. for now we are stuck with card that give you the best of the best at a price that is a months rent in some place . and it is insane. Further more would be nice for a trade in program from the companies, you have a older card step up to the next series, oh you have a 200 series video card, step up to a 300 series card for your card and this price oh you have a 300 series well do we have a deal for you, for your card and this price you can step in to the 400 series for your card and this price, same with Nvidia. then i think more and more people would be able to upgrade about every year, like the companies would hope they would. they still make money, and give those that can not rush out and up grade every time and new launch happens, making the video cards more open ion the way of upgrades for people that can not shell out the price tag. but again Im only pissing in the wind with saying that. just like the price tags dropping down to a real level …

  11. Hi captain here, the first GCN 1.2 chip was released 03 September 2014 that’s over 20 and a half months ago. Relatively speaking 1 and a half months is not that long considering how long we have been waiting for a new architecture.
