Head back to the arcade this weekend with the Atari Vault

Although we might all soon build our own virtual arcades in virtual reality, it's been a long time since that was the way most of us enjoyed our games. We can channel that retro feel this weekend though, as the Atari Vault has just been released on Steam, bringing 100 classic titles to the digital platform.

Atari may not be a name that many of the social networking and mobile gamers of today recognise, but back in the '80s, Atari was a powerful force in the gaming industry. It released Asteroids, Centipede, Pong and even the game that many hailed as the killer of the entire industry at the time: E.T. [yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnfvlqjvk7A']

And all of those (save for E.T.) are part of the new Atari Vault bundle, among many other titles from that era. Alongside the arcade classics are many ports of the Atari 2600, one of the most iconic gaming consoles of all time.

Although it doesn't take much more than an emulator to get these sorts of games working on a PC today, adding them to Steam does bring a number of exciting additions. There's multiplayer functionality, on and offline, as well as support for the Steam Controller, the addition of a new UI with cabinet and box art, and the original soundtracks for every game on the list.

You can buy the entire collection on Steam now at 15 per cent of, for £12.74.

KitGuru Says: It seems a real shame that Donkey Kong isn't on that list. There is also some shenanigans afoot in the fact that Asteroids is in that collection three times under different guises, there's two versions of Centipede and two versions of Missile Command. It wouldn't be a classic games collection if they weren't pumping up the numbers, but was that really needed here?
