HTC Vive to ship on 1st April, price to be announced Monday

It looks like HTC and Valve are currently preparing to dish out the last few details on the HTC Vive next week. We already knew that pre-orders were planned to go live on the 29th of February but as it turns out, HTC is apparently planning to announce the price and release date a little early on Monday the 22nd of February at the Mobile World Congress.

According to a source familiar with Valve and HTC's plans, the price and release date announcement will take place on the first day of MWC, which kicks off on Monday. This information wasn't ‘officially shared' with the site VentureBeat but it apparently comes from a reputable source speaking with them.

The price announcement will give potential buyers time to prepare or make the final decision on whether or not they will pre-order on the 29th of February. On top of that, the first units are said to be scheduled to ship out on the 1st of April, so the turn around from pre-order to having one in your hands should be fairly quick depending on demand.

Right now we still don't know how much the Vive will cost but signs point to it being more expensive than the $600 Oculus Rift, thanks to its additional sensors and included motion controllers.

KitGuru Says: A lot of people are excited about the HTC Vive but it is likely going to be a very costly purchase. You will also need the extra room to use one as the Vive is designed to be used on a room-scale, with no furniture in the way. Are any of you planning on picking up VR this year?

  6. Either one works.

  7. And someone doesn’t know how to be decent to his fellow man.

  8. Id prefer if I join the game late. There are still going to be problems with Oculus CV1 and Vive. I am sure there will be a lot of people that don’t realize how they will put it on, throw up, take it off, then never put it on again. Id prefer higher resolution and higher refresh – perhaps two displays, just what nvidia are thinking, with 240Hz 4K would make it really fluid enough for motion sickness to go away permanently as well as remove completely screen door effect and improve all textures so it can be immersive enough.

Nvidia, AMD, if you can’t invent a good enough architecture, just put 2 or 3 or 10 GPUs stuck together on one board. They will consume 500W – 1000W, doesn’t matter – GIVE US PERFORMANCE to drive high quality VR!

  9. stupidity is a disease that needs to be quarantined. hopefully he thinks about what he said and finds a new hobby far away from here.

  10. I hope you’re not serious.

  11. Perhaps the price is an April fools joke!!! 799!!!
