Ubisoft confirms Assassin’s Creed skipping 2016

A few weeks back we heard rumors that Ubisoft may be giving Assassin's Creed a break this year, with no main installation to the series set to release this year. Now this move has been confirmed but Ubisoft isn't just pushing back the next Assassin's Creed game, it is also re-examining the whole franchise and so we may see some changes to the way the series is handled in the future.

Writing in a blog post today, Ubisoft said: “This year, we also are stepping back and re-examining the Assassin’s Creed franchise. As a result, we’ve decided that there will not be a new Assassin’s Creed game in 2016. Since the release of Assassin’s Creed Unity, we’ve learned a lot based on your feedback. We’ve also updated our development processes and recommitted to making Assassin’s Creed a premier open-world franchise.”

“We’re taking this year to evolve the game mechanics and to make sure we’re delivering on the promise of Assassin’s Creed offering unique and memorable gameplay experiences that make history everyone’s playground.”

The next Assassin's Creed game will launch in 2017 and will be based in Egypt. According to earlier rumors, the game will be going for more of an open-world ‘Witcher' feel so we could end up seeing a very different game compared to past entries in the series.

We still don't know when next year's Assassin's Creed will launch, perhaps Ubisoft will keep it in development until holiday season next year, or perhaps Assassin's Creed will now be a Summer franchise, either way, we should find out more later on in the year.

KitGuru Says: Assassin's Creed was in need of a good shake-up. While I did enjoy Syndicate, it was still a pretty standard AC game with familiar gameplay and mechanics. Hopefully, when the franchise returns next year, it will introduce some big changes. Do you guys think Ubisoft is doing the right thing by skipping 2016?

  1. Yes , it needs to fill in the centuries it missed by jumping to the French Revolution , then the Victorian England ,

  2. the best AC games were and always will be the first 4 released. AC1, AC2, AC:Brotherhood, AC:Revelations.
After that all went down the drain 🙂
