AMD launches driver update for Rise of the Tomb Raider

Following on from the game's initial release last Friday, AMD has launched a new Radeon Software driver update to bring some specific optimizations for the game as well as a CrossFire profile for mutli-GPU users. Rise of the Tomb Raider is a Nvidia-backed title, so the green team managed to get its own ‘Game Ready' driver update a bit faster in time for launch day though users did report issues with the SLI profile.

We already did our own game analysis of Rise of the Tomb Raider, featuring graphics cards from AMD and Nvidia and in general, the game performs quite well on modern hardware. However, AMD users may find that this driver helps them a bit.

The driver is known as the Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.1.1 update and right now, there are two known issues listed in the driver notes for Rise of the Tomb Raider, in which users may face flickering in some game locations when the game is left idle with CrossFire switched on. The game may also crash when launched with very high settings, SMAA and the resolution set to 4K.

If you're running an AMD card, you can find the driver update, HERE.

KitGuru Says: I found Rise of the Tomb Raider to be quite the performer, I also happen to think that it is the best looking game available on the PC right now so keep that in mind when trying to run it. Have any of you tried Rise of the Tomb Raider yet? How is it running for you? I know some have had issues with SLI, so I'd be interested to hear what the CrossFire experience is like.

  1. Will there be a new set of FPS benchmarks for Rise of the Tomb Raider with the updated AMD drivers?

  2. Potentially in future GPU reviews if Allan decides to use it but the current game analysis won’t be updated. As much as I’d love to go back and spend another day benchmarking, I just don’t have the time amongst everything else I need to do, like the daily news and other reviews.

  4. I have crossfire setup which runs fine but unfortunately I bought it from the windows app store instead of steam and it is littered with bugs.

  5. valgarlienheart .

I just tried this on my 270X and I can notice an improvement, now I can stay well above 30fps on the high preset, even in the village I generally stay above 30 with a few 28/29s here and there.

  6. i generally stay at 60-90 fps….and then the village takes me down to 30-40. Wow, suddenly don’t feel like playing

    these use the new driver!

  8. Generally I set everything to ultra except for shadows, and do just fine. Not understanding how I can run games like witcher 3 at max and get 60+ fps and then this chops about. The update actually made the game unplayable for me, as it was a lot smoother performance wise before 16.1.1 for me.
