It seems that Microsoft is due to get more aggressive with its Windows 10 upgrades. While the new OS is already installed on 110 million devices, Microsoft is going to start presenting Windows 10 to users as a ‘recommended upgrade' update starting early next year. This means that the Windows 10 download will start automatically on PCs and upon download, users will be presented with the option to go through with the install.
According to Terry Myserson, speaking with The Verge, “A user will be presented with a choice to install Windows 10. hey’ll come back to their PC and there will be a dialog where they can choose to upgrade to Windows 10 or choose not to upgrade to Windows 10.”
Microsoft doesn't want to trick users in to installing Windows 10, so while the OS will automatically download the update, users should have the option whether to install it or not on Windows 7 or Windows 8.1. Microsoft is also making changes to the way pirated versions of Windows update to the latest OS.
According to The Verge's interview, Microsoft is already winning over pirates. Apparently, when a non-genuine Windows user attempts to upgrade to Windows 10, a message pops up saying that only genuine copies can update. According to Terry Myserson, plenty of pirates have gone ahead and bought a genuine license upon seeing this message. This all seems to be a part of Microsoft's effort to get one billion devices running Windows 10 within the next couple of years.

You are nuts. Windows 10 is free, runs better than Windows 7 and gets rid of software bottlenecks in programing. Its amazing so many so called techies don’t like upgrades. MS pushing the envelope of technology. Yes? That’s not a bad thing? You still have the option of staying in the dark ages, but this will help the less tech savy know they can upgrade.
or u are nuts. win 10 has restrictions, bugs and limited backward compatibility. the automatic download slows down the pc-s and use up download limits, cant be turned off or be removed, and while previous windows has lifetime update win10 has only 1 year and then you have to pay for them. yes, they should make ppl aware of the possibility but fuck off my pc if i dont ask for it
10 is dissapointing, Ive had “critical error. desktop and Cultana no working” 4 times. Microsoft have no patch for it. Had to find a 10yo boy on youtube to fix it. and it dousent always work then. They should have fixed it in testing phase. Now they say “we cant fix it permanently.. There is no such thing as a free lunch. Perhaps that is why it is free. They can say “what did you expect from a free gift”. Its back to windows 7 for me if I can find anouther 10 yo boy on you tube to show mw how.
Thats ok if it works, (see my above post) It may be free and is probably free beacause Microsoft couldnt sell it with faults. I prefer the dark ages of 7 where it works all the time.
Thomas,Can you tell me where you saw that Microsoft will charge for updates after 1 year? I wouldnt be suprised but havnt seen it written down.
I am always astounded of how often Microsoft repeats their mistakes. You don’t rush the release of a new OS and then wonder why it isn’t accepted by everyone. Windows 10 is somewhere between Windows 8 and Vista on the disaster scale.
Trying to force the customers will not change the situation. Personally I am so nerved and frustrated by the amount of bugs and issues, that I will probably uninstall / format the SSD Win10 is on and sell the Win8 Pro license it shares the key with. This doesn’t even include the bad taste of the OS itself gives in terms of usability, prodactivity and general design..
Windows 7 was never perfect too. Still it was the best operating system Microsoft produced in the last decade. Everything after is just trying to create a complete dictatorship. We admins want to be the master of my own systems, not the slave of Redmond. Windows Seven offered the best compromise if you will.
Unbelievable users have to fight their own OS since Windows 8 instead of having a well balanced harmony. The job of a operating system is to be similar to a maid or a butler -> to serve. Not being a drill sergeant to make the users do what Microsoft wants!
It’s not true, just something people have always been suggesting. Microsoft has made it clear that Windows 10 is free for life.
Windows 10 has been flawless on 4 devices for me, 1 desktop and 3 notebooks. One of the notebooks is 5 years old and while it would bluescreen going to sleep on Windows 7, it’s flawless on Windows 10. Some people are scared of change.
I’ll stick to my XP thanks. Updates are still available.
He’s mistakenly referring to the “free transitional upgrade for 1 year”, where Microsoft said that transitioning to Windows 10 from an older OS will be free for 1 year. If you wait til after then you can pay, though it seems they may be changing their minds on that part.
The automatic updates are only the home version. All higher versions don’t force updates on you.
To be fair, I have not upgraded yet because I will not tolerate forced updates. I will get 10 Pro some time (when I can afford it).

Windows 10 Pro forces updates too, so you’ll be out there. What Windows 10 allows for Pro users is the option to defer upgrades. This delays for several months any upgrades (i.e. Windows 11, major updates), while still installing security updates. That’s it. No option to only notify, or download then notify to install like WIndows 7, just auto install (forces restarts) or notify to restart (forces installs then prompts for a restart time).
I am running Windows 10 Pro on one of my computers and Windows 10 Home on another of my computers, so I know first hand the update options. With 7 I set to “Notify before downloading and installing”. I installed them within a day or two, I just didn’t want it hogging my internet connection and disk bandwidth without my permission. No luck with that on Windows 10.
Sadly AMD does not support Linux as good as they could. Their OpenGL is a mess compared to Intel or Nvidia and the performance and stability lacks behind by worlds. Maybe this will change with Vulkan, but the last years showed that AMD is not much interested in Linux.
AMD will most likely focus their ressources onto DirectX12 in Windows 10. This plays into the hands of Microsoft. I see it as vicious circle for consumers.
Thanks for that, I wasn’t aware it was still forced on you. At least you can defer the updates til you have bandwidth, or have at least saved your work. I would always defer updates after Apple caused HDD wipes nearly 15 years ago. Being in a bandwidth backward country makes forced updates almost criminal.
That’s weird because i run Linux Mint on 3 AMD based dekstops and i’ve never had a problem neither with drivers or something else. Sure my empirical evidence doesn’t mean that other users have no problems with AMD.
I’d say it is a matter of your usage profile. There is no way to discard your claims expect the terrible long list of bugs and issues of users with AMD cards. OpenGL is not their forte and many users got so frustrated, they switched to other hardware. This is the situation many LInux users face since years.
Strangely enough similar things happen to Windows 10 right now, no matter the vendor. There are still some guys out there who claim to not have an issue. When the majority says otherwise, something is not right. Sadly for everyone is that Microsoft now pushes out this beta-OS with shameless trickery. Linux at least gives users a choice.
