Asus might make its own version of Microsoft’s Hololens

It seems that Microsoft might not be the sole supplier of the Hololens as Asus is apparently in talks with the company to build its own version. This would make Asus the first third-party company to build a version of Microsoft's augmented reality headset if a deal can be made. Asus getting involved with augmented reality devices could bring a boost to that particular market as well.

This news comes from Jonney Shih, Asus' chairman, and Terry Myerson, Microsoft's executive vice president of Windows and devices while speaking with CNET. This news also follows Microsoft's announcement that the first Hololens will be available to developers early next year for $3000, those interested will also have to register and be approved by Microsoft before buying one.

While Asus has expressed interest, the company is still evaluating what form its version of the Hololens would take and who it would be made for specifically, according to the report. All of that said though, Microsoft still doesn't have any information on a consumer version of the Hololens, with the current iteration being reserved for developers.

I would assume that if Asus did create its own Hololens, it would be more consumer oriented, while Microsoft handles the needs of developers. So these plans may not take shape for another couple of years, if at all.

KitGuru Says: I would personally love to see a ‘Republic of Gamers' edition Hololens once the technology is at that point. From what I've head so far, the Hololens currently offers a pretty limited field of view, which could dampen the gaming experience, so that is something that still needs to be ironed out.
