Patriot unveils world’s first USB flash drive with type-C connector

Patriot Memory, a well-known supplier of memory modules, NAND flash-based devices as well as various peripherals, on Tuesday introduced one of the world’s first USB flash drives with reversible type-C connector. Initially, owners of Apple’s latest MacBook laptops will use the new drives, but eventually such storage devices are going to become pervasive.

Patriot’s new USB flash drive features two connectors: a standard type-A USB connector as well as all-new reversible type-C USB connector found on Apple’s new MacBook and Google’s latest Chromebook Pixel laptops. Two connectors on one drive will make it easy for end-users to transfer files to and from computers with different USB ports. The drives will be offered in 32GB and 64GB capacities.

The manufacturer did not reveal any performance specifications of its new type-A/type-C USB flash drives and it is unclear whether the product can take advantage of USB 3.0 speeds up to 5Gb/s.

“As many MacBook users rely heavily on external storage options, we wanted to be at the forefront with a product that will cater to these consumers,” said Meng J. Choo, Patriot’s product manager. “As a leading manufacturer of USB and flash memory, we want to offer solutions for our customers that are easy-to-use and provide seamless experiences across all their devices.”

Prices of the new type-A/type-C USB flash drives remain unknown. All the unique novelties usually cost slightly more than regular devices.

KitGuru Says: The new drives from Patriot will hardly become popular overnight because there are not a lot of PCs with type-C USB ports. Nonetheless, the company deserves applauds for introducing flash drives with the new reversible USB connectors. Hopefully, more computer, tablet and smartphone makers equip their devices with USB type-C receptacles in the coming months.
