Nvidia Corp. has finished development of the rumoured GeForce GTX 980 Ti reference design, media reports claim. Moreover, the company may advance its launch in a bid to steal media attention from AMD’s forthcoming Radeon R9 390-series graphics adapters.
General specifications of Nvidia’s upcoming graphics card currently known as the GeForce GTX 980 Ti have been finalized, according to reports from SweClockers and Chiphell. The graphics board will get the fully-fledged GM200 graphics processing unit with 3072 stream processors, but “only” 6GB of GDDR5 memory. By contrast, Nvidia’s current flagship graphics card – GeForce GTX Titan X – carries 12GB of memory.
Since the GM200-based GeForce GTX 980 Ti will likely get printed-circuit board that is very similar to that of the GeForce GTX Titan X, development of the PCB hardly took a lot of time from Nvidia’s engineers.
Nvidia’s partners among graphics cards makers will be able to design their own PCBs for the GeForce GTX 980 Ti graphics card, one media report claims. Therefore, it is logical to expect companies like Asustek Computer, EVGA and other to design advanced GeForce GTX 980 Ti graphics adapters with sophisticated 14-phase voltage regulating modules, enhanced PLL circuitry, improved GPU power plane and other innovations. Such graphics cards will likely be factory overclocked to provide incredible performance.
Earlier it was reported that Nvidia intended to release its second GM200-based graphics adapters in summer or fall, but the fresh rumours indicate that the company may release its new graphics board around the time when competing AMD Radeon R9 390-series solutions (allegedly based on the code-named “Fiji” silicon) hit the market in June. In the past Nvidia used to release new products right after its arch-rival launched its latest offerings. For example, the company launched its GeForce 8800 Ultra graphics card two days after AMD released the ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT.
The price of the graphics adapter currently known as the GeForce GTX 980 Ti will be around $699 – $799. Performance of the graphics solution will be comparable to that of the GeForce GTX Titan X and at present it is unclear how exactly Nvidia will position two similar graphics solutions on the market.
Nvidia did not comment on the news-story.

KitGuru Says: Keeping in mind that the information about the GeForce GTX 980 Ti is unofficial and mostly comes from one or two sources, take it with a huge grain of salt. In fact, unless Nvidia deliberately wants to steal media attention from the Radeon R9 390-series graphics adapters, it does not need to release another GM200-powered graphics solution any time soon. Even the name of the adapter is in question since it leaves Nvidia no options regarding the name for a graphics board powered by a cut-down GM200.
It’s like a Mini-Titan X
Was hoping the price point would make in an attractive SLI alternative to the Titan X, but it seems I’d be better off either shelling out for the Titan or looking at SLI regular 980s…..decisions….
How so? It’s got the same chip as the Titan X, so there’s no reason to buy the Titan X as an alternative, and I would prefer any single GPU over the headache that SLI could easily be.

It makes sense though. 6GB of VRAM costs about $250 and that’s the only difference between this and the Titan X. Although, the Titan X and 980 should both be about $100 cheaper.
I was looking for the performance of a Titan X in a potentially cheaper setup, aka SLI. And SLI doesn’t nearly have the issues it used to have. I would prefer a single card solution most of the time, but if I can get the scaling of two cards with decent enough memory stacking on the advent of Directx 12, I’m opting for that, assuming the price point is attractive enough. Seems like Titan X would be the way to go, however, considering the price.
A single 980 Ti would have pretty much the same performance as the Titan X, there would be a *slight* difference in 4k, maybe a few frames. Just one 980 Ti is a cheaper setup that could reach the Titan X’s performance.
so after the 980? then 1080?
This is what I’ve been waiting for, a Full Fat GM200 that’s tweaked to the max by Nvidia’s partners, I’ll get one now and when a upgrade is needed another maxed out GTX 980 Ti later, SLI leads to a great path. AMD better have lots of umbrellas because Performance Per Watt Champ Maxwell’s Rain Storm will washout AMD’s parade AGAIN.
Considering that DX12’s RAM stacking ability is only going to be used by a dozen or so games for the first two or three years, and the fact that those games won’t take up THAT much VRAM, that doesn’t seem worth it at all. I mean, hell, Linus set up three ultrawide 1440p monitors with three of the 8GB 290X cards and the only game he tested that went over 4GB was Shadow of Mordor. It hit something like 5GB. That was almost double 4k resolution. Unless you just want to mod the living hell out of Skyrim, 12GB of VRAM seems extremely unnecessary.
I need this, stuck with a GTX 650 and been holding off on getting a 980 just for this. Hopefully won’t have to wait too long after the Witcher 3’s launch

I love Nvidia and Im still looking to replace my 680 but I can’t justify Maxwell even with a 980 ti. Read the whitelist from there website. Maxwell is just Kepler with more ROPS, SMs, and L2 cache. It’s more of a hardware change…. The actual architecture is pretty much the same… And yes it has great efficiency and TDP. As a desktop user TDP is pointless. All I want at the end of the day is performance… I can buy a 780 ti and with a heavy clock get close to a 980…. And I can afford $8 more a month on my electric bill if it has more TDP. Pascal is going to be an actual change and around 10x faster. The jump between the series will make this recent one just plan silly and pointless. Nvidia give me a wow factor! 🙂

Call of duty advanced warfare with 2x smaa and 2x super sampling at 1440p uses 11gb vram. The 12gb vram is the primary reason I upgraded from my original titan setup to the titan x.
still glad i got the titan x i will be even more so after i put it under a loop. I already got mine clocked to 1447mhz so its doing me pretty well.
Pascal is going to be game changer so if you can wait until first half of next year go with finFET HBM2 Pascal Powerhouse. I love the perfection of the 980 and the 970 is the biggest GPU bang for the buck but as a upgrade this year from 580 the GM200 GTX 980 Ti has my attention. Next year it will be Skylake Pascal Rig building time for me and that combined with Win10DX12 will make for years of future proof gaming.

A card that will give the Titan X a run for its $1000 price tag, this will be the card to upgrade to for 780 owners waiting to see a worthy upgrade without spending a grand like me.
Pascal is NOT going to be 10x faster. The chart you get that information from clearly states BANDWIDTH not teraflops.
you do realize that nvidia cards will also use Elpida memory when they run out of samsung or want to cut costs on the cards, right? There were whole runs of 700 and 900 series that had Elpida.

Seems like Nvidia is a bit concerned about AMDs New Flagship. It is really a slap in the face though to the people whom purchased the TitanX though. I mean seriously , this is clearly all about saving face for Nvidia.

Wasting watts on a micro stuttering hot AMD GPUs that need a massivee water cooled radiator is not a option, not when Nvidia can do better with its superior performance per watt GPUs. I don’t give a chit about what a lame brained AMD fanatic that needs a 1300 watt PSU and doesn’t pay the electric bill because he lives in his parents basement thinks. I care what my customers think and Nvidia offers a ghost free gaming experience without micro stuttering and no need for a massive water cooled radiator or 1300 watt sucking PSU.

Good news for all those interested with that budget. I’ll wait for the 800 series to buy 2 GTX 870s after 2-4 months from release (after waiting for price adjustment and competition launches).
