GOG is turning PC game keys in to DRM-free digital copies

GOG is gaining in popularity and its easy to see why, the retailer is completely against DRM, has some pretty good sales and now it is even launching a new feature that lets you take a game key from a game that was released on disc and redeem it for a DRM free digital version, which will also work properly on modern PCs.

Unfortunately, this can't be done for just any game you may have lying around on disc. GOG so far only has the feature available for Stalker: Call of Pripyat, Stalker: Clear Sky and Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl. However, if you live in Russia, then you can also redeem copies of Eador: Genesis, Mount & Blade: Warband and Mount & Blade: With Fire and Sword.

GOG

GOG is currently working to incorporate other games but there is currently no word on how often we will see updates to this list. Writing in a press release, GOG's Oleg Klapovsky said: “We have been fighting to free all games from DRM since the very beginning, and this new feature is the next step for us. It's not a simple job, but we plan to bring in even more games in the future.”

Steam also supports physical game keys for select titles. Back in the day, I bought a Half-Life 2 bundle on-disc, which came with Counter-Strike: Source and redeemed it on Steam digitally. However, GOG has a specific focus on older titles, if it could get the publishers on-board, then those old PC discs you have hidden away somewhere might be worth digging out again.

KitGuru Says: Taking physical games, which likely came with built-in DRM, and turning it in to a DRM-free digital copy is a nice idea and could help make some older titles relevant again. Do any of you guys use GOG? Are you sticking solely with Steam?

  5. I just tried my Shadow of Chernobyl key and it didn’t work. I guess its like the keys on steam and only some keys work (mostly only U.S keys).
