Intel to unveil Skylake processors for desktops in August – report

As reported, Intel Corp. will delay its code-named “Skylake” microprocessors for desktops and the new chips will not hit the market in mid-2015, as planned. According to a new media report, the “Skylake-S” chips will hit the market only in August.

DigiTimes reports that Intel intends to release its new central processing units for desktop PCs sometimes in late August, 2015, considerably later than expected. This means that the new CPUs will essentially miss the back-to-school season. In order to ensure that microprocessors are installed into systems shipping in August or September, chipmakers need to start selling them in July.

If Intel starts to ship code-named “Skylake-S” processors in late August, the majority of PCs based on the chips will become available only in October, whereas mass availability will occur during the holiday season.

The web-site claims that the postponed launch of “Skylake” processors may aim to avoid overlapping sales with previous-generation processors, such as “Broadwell” and “Haswell”.

Intel did not comment on the news-story.

KitGuru Says: While the delay of “Skylake” may be good for some mainboard makers and some PC manufacturers, it is not a positive news for the market in general. Many people upgrade their PCs when new microprocessors hit the market, therefore, if Intel delays release of new chips, it means customers will delay purchase not only of new motherboards or CPUs, but new graphics cards, SSDs and other components too.
