More phones in the UK than people

Many areas of technological hardware have had a tough time for sales in 2010, but not so for the mobile phone industry. Recent reports just in show that the phone market has seen a 43 percent global growth.

Smartphones have only been on the market for five years but they account for a whopping 64 percent of all sales in the United Kingdom, a country well known for purchasing a large amount of gadgets.

Carolina Milanesi, Gartner's director of mobile phone research, said the iPhone had “fundamentally changed” the mobile phone market.  She then said Apple, which launched its iPhone in November 2007, was now the third-biggest-selling mobile phone brand in the UK. Apple have sold 1.5m iPhones, including the new iPhone4 model, in the three months to the end of September, compared to 468,000 in the same period last year. Incredible results.

Worldwide, Apple have sold 13.5 million phones, making it the world's fourth largest mobile manufacturer. Their sales figures would be even higher if they haven't been experiencing issues with supply.

The UK is home to 71.2 million mobile phones, 10 million more than the population count. Many people own more than one mobile phone.

KitGuru says: staggering figures all round. It seems the UK is a mobile phone hotbed!
