Windows 9 preview could arrive this year

Rumor has it that Microsoft is preparing a Windows 9 preview for the end of this year ahead of the Operating System's full release next year. It is currently believed that the next iteration of Windows will mainly target those still using Windows 7.

Before Threshold is released next spring, Microsoft is expected to deliver a public preview of the Threshold release, most likely in the fall of 2014.” An unnamed, insider source told ZDNet

Windows 8's Metro UI split user opinion, desktop users didn't like the new design which was designed for tablets and touch screen devices. However, this time Windows will supposedly work differently based on hardware type: “The Threshold OS will look and work differently based on hardware type.”

Despite these rumors, Windows 8.1 is still expected to get a final update before Microsoft moves on to Windows 9. The Start button is also rumored to be returning at some point, although it will still feature the Metro UI's tiles.

KitGuru Says: Nothing is confirmed yet so take this news with a grain of salt, especially since this has come from an unnamed source. What do you guys want to see in Windows 9? What will it take to convince you to upgrade this time around?

  1. I really hope that it isn’t going to be a cloud operating system, i’d rather stick with Windows 8.1 and 7SP1

  2. windows 7 works fine for me…why the need for newer 9and craper) operating systems? that said if it follows windows Operating systems trend of (ie winxp then crappy vista to the awesomness known as windows 7) then windows 9 “should” technically be rather good…guess only time can tell =p

I myself cant wait to try out the new OS as have loved the speed of 8/8.1 yes the start screen is not the best on a desktop but for how snappy the OS feels I can live with it as I have the OS set to boot to desktop, In reply to Matthew Hale Windows 7 may work fine for you but if you understand how hardware moves so fast that an old OS may not support everything the new hardware can just remember Windows was the last OS to fully support USB 3.0 and Trim support for SSD’s and the support for Trim in Win 7 is just a basic version it was not till Win 8 that Windows got full Trim support so technically an SSD should last longer when the OS can do full Trim support.

  4. Love windows 8.1, and I don’t like clouds….give me sunshine not cloud base Windows 9. If M$ goes to a Cloud base Windows 9, there going to lose a lot of upgrader, I sit that one out with Windows 8.2 or what ever it’ll be called Windows 8.1 SP1?

I don’t get it, with so much info going around, in the age of telecommunication and information why do people not know yet? I’m using windows 8, with an app(if you wanna call it that way) called Pokki. It boots my windows in desktop mode, with a taskbar, startbutton, and all the features previous windowses had, also, it is very fast, combined with an SSD it’s the perfect OS for me so far, I didn’t even bother to upgrade to 8.1 since i had no crashes, no problems of any sorts with this ever since I installed it almost 2 years now, right after it’s release. So for all the people that claim to be so aware about their software choices and flaws, you should know how to customise an OS to your liking nowadays, the requirements are hardware-implied, so you can’t run windows 95 on a computer built this year without problems, but you can always customise an OS to your liking more or less.

  6. Well for 2015 you can either use headphones or speakers. Unless the program itself has any options to redirect the sound output you can’t do it manually. You have to set the default output from windows to one of them and then try to find a way to set another window/program to another output through tricks and what not.
