Amazon to launch ‘singles’ format for Kindle

KitGuru loves the Kindle 3 – our recent review said it was one of the most exciting devices released this year. Amazon electronic book sales are very strong already, however with a new initiative Amazon might be driving even more sales to customers who find reading books a bit of an ordeal.

They said yesterday that they are launching a new ‘Singles' section on their electronic bookstore which is going to dedicated to literature around 10,000 to 30,000 words, or 30 to 90 pages in length. This is about the same size as several chapters in a standard book.

Kindle 3 – selling very well

“Today's announcement is a call to serious writers, thinkers, scientists, business leaders, historians, politicians and publishers to join Amazon in making such works available to readers around the world,” the company said. They have opened this up to public contact at [email protected]

The pricing has yet to be confirmed, although Amazon are really competitive with their book sales, sometimes undercutting Apple by 75%. This plan is the newest idea to help the Kindle growth rate high as research shows that people like smaller pieces to enjoy on the bus, or during travels.

The confidence in Amazon is high right now with shares up $1.89 to $154.92 during afternoon trading.

KitGuru says: Good idea? We think it might attract more sales from people who like editorial ‘snapshots'.
