New Unreal Tournament to be completely free

Epic Games has announced that it is working on a brand new Unreal Tournament and the best part about it is that it's going to be completely free, not free to play with micro-transactions but actually free, taking a step back from the current trend in video games.

The game will be powered by Unreal Engine 4, which as we have already seen, looks amazing. It will also be spread across all PC platforms including Windows, Linux and Mac. A small team began officially developing the game yesterday but we might get to play it sooner rather than later as Epic plans on developing the new title “in the open”.

The game will stay “true to its roots as a competitive FPS” but it will take some time to develop in to an Alpha state, at which point Unreal Tournament fans will get a say in the direction the game is heading in collaboration with Unreal Engine 4 developers and Epic Games.

Epic Games describes a Dota 2 like payment system where users and developers can create aesthetic content to sell on the marketplace, the money made will be split between the creator and Epic Games itself: “We'll eventually create a marketplace where developers, modders, artists, and gamers can give away, buy, and sell mods and content. Earnings from the marketplace will be split between the mod/content developer, and Epic.”

Right now there are no plans set in stone, this is still new to the developer but the company plans to iron out the creases over the course of the games open and closed development:

“A lot of this is brand new for Epic, and we don't yet have everything figured out. Things will probably definitely go wrong from time to time, and when they do, we'll have to work through them together. There will be a lot of tough decisions to make, and not every feature will make it into the game. But if you're a fan of Unreal Tournament, a UE4 developer, or a future modder–or if you just want to learn how we make games–we hope you'll join us. It's going to be fun.”

KitGuru Says: A new Unreal Tournament running on Unreal Engine 4 sounds awesome, if Epic Games sticks to Valve's Dota 2 style money making system then this game will help shape the future of free to play games. If more developers follow like this then maybe we can be done with the greedy style of micro-transactions we currently see in games far too often. Are you guys excited for the new Unreal Tournament? What do you think of Epic's plan to remain free?
