Motorola unveils the Moto G

Earlier this year Motorola released the Moto X, a smartphone built in the US and exclusive to the US. The phone didn't feature high end specs but it did come with an optimised version of Android to deliver the features and experience the average user would expect from a high end device. Now Motorola has announced the next best thing, the Moto G.

The Moto G goes on sale today starting at £135 for the 8GB model but in this day and age, that's no where near enough. You'd be better off springing for the £165 16GB model. The specs of the phone include:

  • 4.5 inch 720p screen
  • 1.2 GHz Snapdragon 400 quad core processor
  • 5MP camera
  • 1GB RAM
  • 3G/HSPA+
  • 2070 mAh battery
  • Android 4.3

Motto G

While the specs are all pretty similar to the now discontinued Nexus 4, the lack of 4G might bother some, but here in the UK 4G still isn't available for most people and the prices are still quite high. Motorola did note that the Moto G will get Android 4.4 soon in a planned update.

Motorola's CEO said during the announcement that the Moto G has been made to solve the problem with budget devices, singling out Samsung's Galaxy Fame with its poor screen and weak processor.

Kitguru Says: Go back a year and this phone would have been considered high end. If you are on a budget the Moto G could be a good choice. That said, in a year's time the hardware might seem ancient to some.
