Unu media and gaming station to compete with the Ouya

We all know about the Ouya, the first miniature Android console hoping to take on the living room dominance of Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo, and we know all about the wide array of Android tablets that are taking over the PC purchasing space. Well now the Unu Media Station is here to bridge the gap between both tablet, and console.

The media station will come with an Android tablet, a base dock, a gamepad and a remote for TV/media features.

The tablet specs are:

  • 1.6 Ghz quad-core processor
  • 2MP front facing camera with a 5MP rear camera
  • 1080p support and 3D video decoder for external streaming
  • 1GB RAM
  • 8GB Flash memory
  • Micro SD slot
  • 2 x USB ports
  • 1280×800 7″ screen

This new approach combines tablets and consoles in the best way, focusing on playing quality games available from the Play Store and HD streaming. If using a gamepad with Android devices becomes more common it will encourage developers to create console quality games as well as the fun mini games, mobile platforms are generally known for.

Right now pre-orders are only available at Newegg and Gamestop for $249.99 with the release coming on the 8th of November. No UK or European availability yet but it shouldn't be too far behind.

KitGuru Says: I quite like this idea, plenty of older titles are being ported to mobile platforms along with a ton of emulators for older consoles. Being able to use the remote and stream HD movies through Netflix is a big plus too, this could potentially replace my ageing console that purely exists for Netflix purposes. What do you guys think? Would you rather keep consoles and tablets separate or are you happy having the best of everything in one device?
