Turkish PM is not a Facebook fan

The prime minister of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has named social media as “the worst menace to society,” suggesting that it is a tool of liars, that is being utilised to bad mouth the government and support protests in the country.

Protests have been taking place due to the proposed demolition of Istanbul's Taksmi Gezi Park, to allow for a new shopping centre to be built. This is far from the first that has been constructed in the city, another one is something the locals feel is completely unnecessary. Due to police interference in the protest and the use of tear gas and water cannons, more protests with an anti-government focus have sprung up around the country, with many of those involved documenting their experiences online – especially through social media.

The Turkish authorities however believe much of the information being spread is lies, the motivation for which it claims, could be from a foreign power.

Despite the obvious distrust felt towards the PM by his nation's populace though, he is keen to deny claims that he is a dictator. He continued to lash out against social media sites in an interview reported in Radikal (via Wired) where he said: “There is now a menace which is called Twitter. The best examples of lies can be found there.”

  1. I live in Romania, at about one and a half hour flight time from Istanbul. Let me tell you two things about Turkey:
    1. If you are 14 years old and you don’t work in a factory it’s bad and you should be ashamed of yourself. Your family certainly is.
    2. As a turkish worker, you have the right to one week of hollyday for every 5 years of work.

Of chourse social media is bad for their semi-sclavery based economy, lol.

  2. Let me tell you something my Romaninan friend. You are a liar or you are arrogant. Every worker has 20 days of holiday in a year and it is protected by the law. this isn’t china. And of course neither every 14 year old students work in factories nor their families. it is bullshit. The PM said these things because there is massive disinformation campain on the facebook and twitter nowadays. People publish fake pictures of killed or wounded people on social media. İn fact nobody killed in the demostrations. They are gathering people via social media by telling lies. You always have to look at the subjects from different point of views..
