Sony is bringing a PlayStation VR2 app to Steam

Back in May, Sony announced plans to make PlayStation VR2 headsets usable on PCs, granting owners access to a much wider range of virtual reality experiences. Sony will sell an adapter that allows the headset to be hooked up to any gaming PC, but you'll also need to grab the PlayStation VR2 app from Steam to get it all set up properly.

The PlayStation VR2 app that has appeared on Steam isn't anything too exciting. This app won't grant you access to the PlayStation VR experience that you would get on a console. However, it will let you update the headset's firmware and adjust all the necessary settings to get the headset up and running on PC with SteamVR.

Aside from the app, you will also need the headset itself, a pair of Dual Sense VR controllers and the official PlayStation VR2 PC adapter. Sony also recommends that users have at least a 7th Gen Core i5 or 3rd Gen Ryzen 3 processor, and a GTX 1650 or RX 5500 XT graphics card. Those are the minimum requirements, for the best experience, you'll want to look at the recommended spec, which calls for a much newer GPU, such as the RTX 3060 or RX 6600 XT.

Unfortunately, even after the setup is all complete, Sony says that the PS VR2 app needs to remain installed on your system. Fortunately, the app is lightweight, calling for just 700MB of available space.

KitGuru Says: Given the hardware options already available to PC gamers interested in VR, I'm not sure anyone is going to be running out to get a PSVR2 specifically for PC VR. However, for those who already own one of these headsets, PC support is a nice value-add, and it may be the only additional value Sony gives you, as it seems to have pulled back on first-party VR game development.
