Bungie unveils Destiny: Rising, playtests begin in November

For years, Bungie has been working with NetEase on a secret project. At one point, this project was thought to be a new IP, known as ‘Matter'. However, the final result is something quite different. This week, Bungie and NetEase announced Destiny: Rising, bringing the series to mobile.

Destiny: Rising is a new shooter designed for iOS and Android devices. The game is developed in collaboration with NetEase and will offer players a chance to take the Destiny universe on the go, with first-person and third-person shooting, and returning characters from Destiny 2, as well as some new faces.

For all of its faults, the one thing Destiny has always got right has been gunplay, with some of the best shooting on offer in terms of overall feel, particularly on controller. NetEase hopes to translate this over to mobile, and we'll get to see how well it works quite soon.

Destiny: Rising is due for its first playtest in November in the US and Canada. The game is due to get a full launch sometime in 2025, which is set to be a big year for Bungie, with its new console and PC shooter, Marathon, also due to launch.

KitGuru Says: As someone who is already burned out on Destiny, I'm unlikely to really give this a go. However, as with most mobile spin-offs, this game is likely to be aimed at bringing new players into the franchise for the first time, rather than as a staple for established fans.
