Samsung announces a pair of Android 4.0 tablets

Samsung has just announced two new Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich tablets, the Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1) and the Galaxy Note 10.1.

Just like I speculated when the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) was announced I knew Samsung would announce a larger 10.1 inch version fairly soon, and I was right. Samsung has just announced the 10.1 inch tablet, part of the Galaxy Tab 2 lineup.

Samsung's lower-end 10.1 inch tablet

Like the Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) the 10.1 inch iteration only offers minor upgrades over the original Galaxy Tab series of Android tablets.

Pretty much the only difference between the two recently announced Galaxy Tab 2 tablets is the screen sizes and resolution. The Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1) has a 10.1 inch 1280×800 PLS display while the Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) has to make do with a 7 inch 1024×600 PLS display.

The rest of the specifications remain identical except for the battery – the 10.1 incher gets a 7000 mAh battery. What stays the same is a 1.0 GHz dual-core processor, 1 GB of RAM and 16 or 32 GB of internal storage .

Where Samsung is looking to enhance its tablets is with the Galaxy Note 10.1, eerily similar to the Galaxy Note smartphone which also includes the famous “S Pen” for all your sketching and writing requirements.

The 10.1 inch tablet is essentially a larger version of its 5.3 inch younger brother with a 10.1 inch 1280×800 PLS display. Running the show will be a unspecified 1.4 GHz dual-core processor with 1 GB of RAM and either 16, 32 or 64 GB of internal storage. There will also be Wi-Fi only and Wi-Fi + 3G models. The 3G models will have quad-band (850/900/1900/2100) 3G support.

There a couple of cameras included, a 3 MP rear facing sensor with a LED flash and a 2MP video calling camera for all your Skype calls to family and friends.

Both of these Samsung tablets will be running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with Samsung's TouchWiz skin sprinkled on top.

Kitguru says: It looks as if Samsung is trying to mix things up within its tablet line, they have tried this previously with many different screen sizes but this time they are going with a smarter route – tiered models of the same screen size.
