Tesco set to launch its ‘Hudl’ budget tablet today

You know when supermarkets get in on the trend, that a bit of tech is getting way too popular. Today Tesco is expected to announced the launch of its new budget tablet, called the “Hudl,” at a press event later today. The price tag is thought likely to be somewhere between £100 and £130.

Hudl will be android based but whether it has been certified for play store access remains to be seen. However, it will probably be launched as a way of accessing Tesco owned ‘Blinkbox' and ‘Clubcard TV' streaming services. Many tablets at this price range, most notably the Kindle Fire, don't include play store access and that is a pretty big downside when running Android.

Proposed specifications include;

  • 7 inch 720p IPS display
  • 1.6 GHz quad core processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 16gb internal storage

Interestingly it may come with expandable storage, a micro HDMI port and dual cameras, one with 3Mp the other with 2Mp. As far as colour options go, there are four supposedly coming: blue, purple, red and black. Usually we see a white option in phones and tablets but this may not be the case this time.

This may have been a long time coming, earlier this year Tesco bought an Ebook app company called ‘Mobcast' and rebranded it as ‘Blinkbox books'.

KitGuru Says: Stretching Blinkbox into a range of services to sell a budget tablet sounds pointless. In the current market, it seems everyone company with the funds is striving to launch a tablet but nobody is pushing the boundaries of them, just simply releasing cheap piles of junk. I wouldn't bother with this one. What do you guys think of the new Blinkbox centric tablet?
