Virgin Media to turn home routers into WiFi hotspots

If you are a Virgin Media customer, then soon you may find yourself sharing your connection with others as this week, Virgin Media announced plans to co-opt customer connections and turn their routers into public WiFi hotspots. The rollout will first hit customers with a Superhub 3 router and while the system is fairly similar to BT's own public WiFi service, Virgin's service does work a bit differently.

Virgin Media claims that customers should not see an impact on their speeds as extra bandwidth will be allocated. The data being used up by the public is also kept separate to that running through the usual home connection, so public WiFi users shouldn't be able to see any of the devices connected to the home connection.

There is one key difference between BT's hotspots and Virgin's though. While BT offers its public WiFi service for free to BT customers, it also makes the connection accessible to non-customers for a fee. Virgin Media is currently only offering access to its hotspots to paying subscribers via an iOS or Android app.

Of course, anyone uncomfortable with the idea of sharing their router can opt-out of the system, though you will be opted in by default. Virgin Media customers should start receiving letters or emails about these changes fairly soon.

KitGuru Says: I live in a fairly busy area, so I don't necessarily trust that this system wouldn't affect my own connection. Still, it doesn't seem like Virgin is doing this as a way to double dip on connection charges, instead, this is intended as a free service for Virgin customers when they are out and about. How do you guys feel about this?

  3. Router in modem mode, so no trouble here. Except for contention and network issues in my area.

  4. Oh hell no that would not be happening if I was their customer it should be a opt in only type of thing. If you pay for something you should have the right to say yes or no to this. If I was their customer the wireless would be turned off for sure even if they try to turn it back on it would be staying off. Not all that hard to break into a router and cut the antenna leads is needed if they were to persist on turning it on. In my own setup I always turn off the providers wireless because I have a much better router and the wireless is a lot faster. These companies need to remember we are their customers and with that being said their first priority should to to their customers not to everyone else.

  6. They can fuck right off, my connection barely works half the fucking time as it is without some ass hole hoping onto my connection. This is not going to benefit me, i pay nearly 50 fucking quid a month for my connection, are they going to give me a decrease in my monthly fees so others can freeload of my connection? No, they are going to profit off of others who are paying to access your connection that you already pay for.

    Fuck right off, if they can provide me with a solid stable service that was at least 90% of what i was offered, that had a stable ping and no lag, i would be happy to have my shit used with proper compensation, but as it stands, i don’t fucking think so.

  8. But, they are helping their customers by giving out free WiFi hotspots. Anyways, without opting people in by default and telling them they can turn it off, only a few thousand people across the UK will actually do it, causing the whole plan to be useless.

  9. Well, maybe connecting to a Virgin Hotspot near your house will give you better connection.

  13. I’ve got my Virgin router set to Modem mode but have a separate ASUS wireless router that’s got a private network for in house and an open network for neighbours and visitors of the shops downstairs. I don’t see any effect on my bandwidth.

  16. I agree. I’ve had an average speed of 10Mb on an upto 200Mb connection for over a year. Connection completely dropped out 3 times last week. Currently waiting for my second engineer to come out and tell me there isn’t a problem, I’d like to be able to get free wifi when out and about, but with my current speed issues anyone connecting to mine would just mean my speeds disappear. They say they are going to give extra bandwidth to those that allow their routers to be used for the free wifi but cannot give customers the speeds they advertise.

  17. There are none as yet and i do not use wifi, my PC is connected via ethernet. So basically this function is useless to me because when i am out i have a 4G internet on my phone, which does everything i need at around 30 Mbits/sec

    Any one that uses those bold characters to advertise jobs are almost always scammers, just so that other people don’t fall for stuff like this 🙂
