iPad 3 problems becoming more widespread

It would be fair to say that the iPad 3 launch was positive. Much of the press, including Kitguru raved about the new high resolution retina screen and gaming prowess. There was little to dislike, apart from the slightly added weight when compared to the iPad 2. Over the last week however problems have been noted via various publications and on Apple oriented forums.

A list of the current reported problems are as follows:

  1. There are concerns raised over the heat that the new device emits. Some people have posted to say that their device has been switching itself off due to the internal temperatures, and this has been linked to the larger battery to handle the increased horsepower from the latest design. Several Kitguru staff members own the iPad 3 and none are reporting the same problems, but it would be a concern that can't be ignored, due to the reasonably high level of reports on various forums.
  2. The iPad 3 seems to be reporting a full charge even when the battery has dropped to around 90 percent. Apple haven't admitted this problem yet, but they experienced similar problems in the past with a misreported wireless signal strength from the iPhone, so it is possible. This could be fixed in a software update.
  3. Wi-Fi reception is being reported from some camps as less than stellar. From the reports we have sourced,  this appears to be a problem with both Wi-Fi and Wi-fi/4G models. Again, Kitguru staff members haven't reported experiencing connection problems.
  4. When is 4G not 4G? when you live in parts of Europe and Australia. The 4G support on the iPad 3 will only work in some parts of the world, including the USA. There is no way to fix this as it is hardware based, so problem countries will have to wait on the iPad 4 for full 4G support. Apple aren't very supportive with this problem even though Australia’s Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said that “Apple’s recent promotion of the new ‘iPad with WiFi and 4G’ is misleading because it represents to Australian consumers that the product can, with a SIM card, connect to a 4G mobile data network in Australia, when this is not the case”. It is now going further and seeking an injunction to prevent Apple selling any more product until the packaging/messaging etc have all been changed.

None of the above seem to be having any kind of impact on the sales of the iPad 3, as Apple are still reporting moderate waiting lists in many countries as they try to keep up with demand. We will be interested to see the upcoming financial report when the iPad 3 can be factored into the revenue stream.

  4. How about the fact that photos won’t sync to iPad 3 with Windows 7? Check out the pages and pages of complaints on Apple’s support forums. Apple has yet to address it or even acknowledge it. Time to return the iPad3.

  5. The wifi range issue on the new iPad (3) is really annoying, I was really sadden when I tried my new toy and this happened to me I spent quite a bit of time researching for a solution, without any luck. All of the methods I found didn’t work for me. Then, with all hope lost, I came across Pong Research cases. This guys make a very special case which has a built-in antennae that redirects signals and boost the wifi range of your new iPad, iPhone and other devices. This put and end to my new iPad 3 poor wifi range . As a result, I’m able to connect to my router without a problem at all.
