Rumour about Apple’s plan to develop its own microprocessors for its Macintosh laptops have been circulating for many years now, but at present Intel Corp.’s microprocessors provide considerably better performance than Apple’s ARM-based chips. Brian Krzanich, chief executive officer of Intel, believes that the company’s chips will continue to be considerably better than Apple’s own, which is why the company will keep using them inside its PCs.

“Apple is always going to choose the supplier who can provide them the most amount of capability and innovation for them to build on, for them to innovate,” Krzanich said during an interview with CNBC, reports AppleInsider. “They are a company based on innovation. Our job is to continue to deliver parts that have that capability, that are better than our competitors, and then they want to use our parts.”

Intel’s latest microprocessors code-named “Broadwell” not only offer high performance, but also consume considerably lower amount of power than predecessors. As a result, it makes a lot of sense for Apple to use Intel’s new chips inside its Macintosh computers.

While Apple is a big customer of Intel that buys millions of microprocessors, Intel notes that it has a number of other big customers. While Advanced Micro Devices no longer actively competes against Intel in the high performance segment of the market, Intel still needs to innovate in order to enable its partners to build better products.

“I wake up every morning making sure that across the board, whether it's Apple or Lenovo or Dell or any of our customers, we have to provide the most competitive part,” said Mr. Krzanich.

KitGuru Says: Although Apple’s mobile microprocessors are usually faster than chips from other developers, they cannot compete against those from Intel in terms of performance. Since Intel innovates its platforms pretty fast, it is unlikely that Apple’s chips will match Intel’s any time soon.
